2,000 Turkana Families Receive Cash Aid Under Drought Relief Programme
The program provides immediate assistance to drought-affected families in Turkana County who need help while it also strengthens their capacity to protect themselves against future droughts.

The drought relief program has provided cash assistance to 2,000 families living in Turkana County. Turkana County.The cash transfer program has been established to assist 2,000 families in Turkana County who have experienced drought. The program also included the distribution of food supplies to 10 schools in Suguta and Lokori Kochodin.

The Kenya Red Cross works as a development partner for the county to assist with its drought response efforts according to Patrick Losike who serves as County Executive for Public Service Administration and Disaster Management.

The Kenya Red Cross implemented the intervention through County Steering Group to prevent any duplication of efforts according to Rukia Abubakar who serves as Regional Coordinator for Turkana. She noted that the organization was assigned to cover Suguta and Lokori Kochodin while other partners focused on different affected areas. The assessment team gathered data to evaluate future needs but Abubakar reported that residents and livestock still face dangerous conditions.

The Area Chief Ekiru Alokas and other local leaders praised the collaboration between the County Government and the Kenya Red Cross because it showed how the community helped ensure equal distribution of aid to beneficiaries. The registration process gave vulnerable groups the highest priority according to them.

Local leaders accepted the support but they urged the government and its partners to increase the number of beneficiaries while adding animal feed to the relief package to protect pastoral livelihoods.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen social protection and build resilience among drought-affected households in Turkana County while developing long-term food security solutions for the region.
