Julius Migos Ogamba Announces Plan to Reduce TVET Fees and Broaden Access
The government will maintain its commitment to invest in TVET infrastructure and curriculum development and capacity building which will help young people acquire essential modern workforce skills according to Ogamba.

Government to Review College Fees to Prevent Dropouts

The Education Cabinet Secretary announced that Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions will reduce tuition fees which will benefit trainees financially and decrease student dropouts.

During the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic academic block inauguration, Ogamba explained that students presented tuition complaints which he viewed as an entrance barrier for education.

The students and trainees inside shared their difficulties with me according to my discussions with them. He stated that his team was assigned to evaluate school fees for the purpose of reducing them.

He ordered the immediate start of the review process while he confirmed that a consultative meeting would handle the issue. He explained that the previous university study brought about fee decreases which varied from 15 percent to 40 percent.

The university fees were reduced between 15 percent and 40 percent after we conducted our review. We will conduct a downward review to make sure every trainee stays in school and completes their education.

Students Urged to Apply for HELB and Universities Fund Support

The CS urged trainees to access financial assistance through both Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and Universities Fund. The institutional help desks exist to support students through the application process while they guide eligible students towards available financial assistance.

Government Targets Two Million TVET Enrolments by 2027

The administration aims to achieve two million youth enrollment in TVET institutions before 2027 according to Ogamba. The government reported that it inherited 297000 TVET enrollments while 800000 students attended universities which created an educational system that needed complete restructuring.

Coast Region Lags in Grade 9 to 10 Transition

Ogamba reported that 99 percent of students across the nation achieved successful completion of their transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum system. The Coast Region stood at 95 percent completion which fell short of the nationwide completion target.

Education Directors and County Commissioners must enhance their follow-up activities to guarantee that all students make transition to the next educational level.

Textbook Distribution and Presidential Directive on Access

The CS revealed that approximately nine million textbooks had started distribution to learning facilities which would reach an estimated 11 million textbooks by the end of the month.

The President ordered that no student should face admission denial because of their inability to pay school fees or obtain uniforms which the government will enforce through their educational policy.

New Sh150 Million Academic Block Commissioned

The Kenya Coast National Polytechnic opened its five-level academic block which cost Sh150 million to construct during a year from September 2024 to 2025 through internal funding and savings.

Ogamba commended the governing council and management of the institution for their responsible management of funds despite the decrease in exchequer funding.

The system demonstrates strong commitment to managing resources efficiently which will help the institution maintain its operations through sustainable funding.

Boosting TVET Infrastructure and Skills Development

The contemporary facility contains operational spaces which include workshops and laboratories and classrooms and administrative offices and features which enable wheelchair users to access all areas.
