Chuka University, KEFRI Explore Collaboration to Boost Forestry Research and Capacity Building

The Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) has hosted a delegation from Chuka University to explore potential areas of collaboration in forestry research, training, and community development.The team from Chuka University was led by Prof. Gilbert Nduru, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, and paid a courtesy call to KEFRI Director Dr. Jane Njuguna. They were received at the KEFRI headquarters by Dr. George Muthike, Deputy Director, Forest Products and Entrepreneurship.

Key Areas of Discussion

According to KEFRI, the discussions covered a wide range of collaborative opportunities, including:Joint training programmes and capacity-building initiatives to enhance expertise across both institutions.Development of joint research proposals and pursuing grant opportunities to support resource mobilisation.Creation of mentorship pathways for Chuka University students to equip them with practical skills, innovative approaches to knowledge management, and scholarly exchange.

“By working together we will empower our students and local communities to co-create solutions that safeguard our forests and support thriving rural livelihoods,” said Prof. Nduru.KEFRI emphasised that such partnerships are essential in advancing sustainable forestry practices while providing learning institutions with practical linkages to industry and research.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen the integration of scientific research into community-based environmental conservation projects. KEFRI stated that the visit reflects a shared commitment between academia and research institutions to address pressing environmental challenges, from forest degradation to climate change adaptation, while enhancing the capacity of future forestry professionals.
