Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders have urged young people to register as voters as preparations begin for the upcoming general elections, emphasizing the importance of youth participation in shaping Kenya’s political future.

Speaking during a party delegates’ meeting held in Eldoret, ODM leader Oburu Oginga encouraged the youth to take part in the voter registration exercise, noting that their involvement is critical to sustaining democracy. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting the broad-based government, stating that ODM continues on the political path established by the late Raila Odinga.

Party Unity and Political Readiness

ODM Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati assured members that the party remains united and prepared for any political eventuality. He dismissed claims of internal divisions, saying ODM is intact and focused on advancing its agenda nationally.

Arati described Eldoret as a cosmopolitan town that should accommodate all communities, stressing that inclusivity is essential for progress and peaceful coexistence. He further clarified that ODM is not in opposition but is part of the broad-based government, working with other political players to strengthen governance.

Call for National Cooperation

The ODM deputy leader emphasized the importance of cooperation between political parties, saying national unity is key to making the country stronger. He maintained that ODM is a national party with support beyond regional boundaries and urged members to remain courageous in their political engagement, even in the face of intimidation.

Youth and Disability Concerns Raised

During the meeting, concerns were raised by the youth and persons living with disabilities. Kevin Oyoo, chairman of the Eldoret Youth Without Jobs from Kapseret, highlighted the need for equal employment opportunities across communities, saying inclusivity should be reflected in hiring practices under the broad-based government.

Persons living with disabilities also expressed frustration over feeling sidelined, noting that many are forced to use personal funds to purchase assistive devices such as wheelchairs to improve their mobility and participation in public life.

ODM Reaffirms Its Mission

ODM members, chanting the slogan “Simba ni Etaya,” reaffirmed the party’s mission to promote unity and national development. Party leaders reiterated their commitment to civic engagement, inclusivity, and empowering young people as the country moves closer to the next general elections.
