Mr. Irungu Against 80-Hour Challenge for Cancer Awareness
Following the collapse of cancer awareness activist James Irungu in Murang'a County as he prepared for a tree-hugging marathon for cancer awareness, medical practitioners have cautioned Kenyans against undertaking extreme physical activities without medical check-up and supervision. The warning comes after Irungu collapsed while trying to hug a tree for an endless 80 hours in the campaign for cancer.
He started the endurance contest at precisely 9:27 PM on Sunday, January 4, 2026, generating public interest owing to its novelty value and the weighty message attached to it regarding cancer awareness. Sadly, around 3 AM on January 8, 2026, just an hour short of his mark, he collapsed and was rushed off to Murang'a County Referral Hospital (MCRH) for urgent medical care.

Strong Health Advisory Issues from Doctor
Dr Kahura, a nephrologist based at MCRH, was one of the doctors that attended to Irungu. He went ahead to give a strong warning to any members of the public who might be tempted to try other endurance-type challenges. He went on to elaborate that any physically demanding activity, especially to the point of great exhaustion with little intake of food and water, can become a real health threat unless properly controlled.
Such instances may be considered successful. Dr. Kahura remarked that the past success of these events, like one undertaken the previous year by Truphena Muthoni from Nyeri County, may spur more people unconsciously to subject themselves to these far-land-challenges.
"Any person undergoing such tests must pass a complete medical examination to see whether his body is fit to stand such rigors," stated Dr Kahura.
Medical Assistance at All Times and Proper Hydration
The medical professional further urged that anyone attempting such an activity must have trained health personnel at the site during the entire course of the activity. The presence of healthcare workers on standby would allow for immediate intervention should the need arise, hence possibly avoiding any life-threatening complication in the process.
Dr. Kahura strongly warned against staying long without food and water, suggesting the use of isotonic fluids to help maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. Safety ought to take precedence at all times regardless of the cause or message being advocated.
"The other much-more-important consideration is preparation. Such exercises should certainly not be undertaken without consideration; this can make the risk escalate very quickly," he added.
Severe Dehydration and Organ Complications
The doctor also reported that Irungu was admitted in a grave condition complicated by severe dehydration and early stages of multi-organ failure. By the time he reached the hospital, Dr. Kahura noted, vital organs including his kidneys, heart, and brain were already beginning to show signs of distress.
"He had acute kidney injury, muscle fatigue, and raised muscle enzymes," Dr. Kahura said. "He was admitted, resuscitated, and given fluids to bring his electrolytes back to normal.''
He said that Irungu's condition has been stabilized, and he is likely to remain under observation for at least 24 hours as the doctors keep a close eye on the recovery.

County Government Acts
Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata also commented on the incident, stating that the immediate concern for the county is the health and wellbeing of Irungu himself. He acknowledged the raised concerns from the doctors regarding the activist's condition, thus the need for close medical monitoring.
"Our focus remains on his personal health since the doctors have raised some concerns about his condition," said Governor Kang'ata.
Though fully endorsing the cancer awareness cause that Irungu was pursuing, the governor stated that there are still strong gaps in the health sector within Kenya, especially on the treatment management of cancer.
"There are many gaps in healthcare, especially when it comes to cancer care," he said.
Governor Kang'ata also noted that the Murang'a County Government would settle Irungu's medical bill in its support while medical experts continue to encourage Kenyans to pay attention to safety and professional advice during these physically consuming awareness campaigns.
