A Kenya Forest Service (KFS) team, led by Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (Advisory and County Liaison), Dr. Thomas Kiptoo, met with Machakos County officials to assess the progress of the Transition Implementation Plans (TIPs). The meeting, held with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, aimed to reinforce local action on sustainable forestry and environmental protection.
Dr. Kiptoo was joined by Mr. Oscar Simanto, Head of Extension Services, and Ms. Millcah Mutua, the County Forest Conservator. Together, they engaged Chief Officer Mr. Benson Metho and senior county staff to evaluate strategies that support ecological restoration and forest health.

County-Led Forest Management for Climate Resilience
Key areas of discussion included the urgent need to develop tailored county forestry programmes and operational plans to guide sustainable forest use. Officials also underscored the role of Community Forest Associations (CFAs) and forest management plans in empowering residents to take part in conservation initiatives.
Policy Alignment to Support Green Growth
The meeting highlighted the importance of aligning county policies with national environmental and forestry frameworks. Strengthening human resource capacity within county teams was seen as critical for effective implementation.
KFS reaffirmed its commitment to providing continued technical and advisory support to enhance sustainable forest governance and climate action at the county level.
