Former Cabinet minister and veteran politician Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo has died following a road accident.
He passed away in the early hours of Saturday after his vehicle was involved in a crash along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. Police confirmed the incident and said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision were ongoing. Further details were not immediately available.

Early Life and Rise to National Prominence

Born on March 21, 1961, Jirongo emerged as a major political figure in the early 1990s, gaining national attention through political mobilisation rather than a conventional career path. A former student of Mang’u High School, he became one of the most talked-about youth leaders of his time.

He rose to prominence in 1992 as the leader of Youth for KANU ’92 (YK’92), a political lobby group formed to support President Daniel arap Moi during Kenya’s first multiparty elections. The group played a pivotal role in campaign mobilisation and fundraising, thrusting Jirongo into the national spotlight at a relatively young age.

From Football to Parliament and the Cabinet

Before entering elective politics, Jirongo served as Chairman of AFC Leopards Football Club in 1991 — a role that expanded his public profile.
In 1997, he was elected Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency and was later appointed Minister for Rural Development in 2002, serving in the final KANU administration.

Although he lost his parliamentary seat in the 2002 general election, he made a strong comeback in 2007, reclaiming it under his own party and remaining its only MP until 2013.

Continued Political Influence and Business Ventures

Jirongo remained politically active in subsequent years, making several attempts at national leadership — including a 2017 presidential bid under the United Democratic Party (UDP). His party later joined the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the 2022 elections, after which he publicly congratulated President William Ruto.

Beyond politics, Jirongo was engaged in real estate and agricultural investments. However, he also faced prolonged financial and legal challenges, including a 2017 High Court bankruptcy declaration over unpaid debts amounting to hundreds of millions of shillings.

Family, Personal Life, and Final Days

Jirongo was polygamous and had a large family. Earlier in 2025, he suffered a personal tragedy following the death of one of his daughters after a short illness — a loss that deeply affected him.

Legacy of a Complex Political Journey

His death closes a political chapter that spanned more than three decades — marked by early influence, resilience, controversy, and charisma. Jirongo leaves behind a legacy of one of Kenya’s most outspoken and influential figures of the post-Moi political era.
