President William Ruto has commissioned the 132kV Lessos–Kabarnet Transmission Line in Baringo County, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s electricity infrastructure expansion and regional power connectivity.

The 65-kilometre high-voltage transmission line was constructed at a cost of Sh1.5 billion and has now been fully integrated into the national electricity grid. The project is expected to improve the reliability, stability and quality of electricity supply in Baringo and neighbouring Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.
Boost to regional power reliability and development

During the commissioning ceremony, President Ruto noted that the project underscores the government’s commitment to expanding access to affordable and reliable electricity as a catalyst for economic growth, social development and industrialisation.

Stable power supply, he said, is essential for attracting investment, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and improving service delivery across key sectors of the economy.

Strengthening the national grid and renewable integration

The project was implemented by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) and includes a 132/33kV Kabarnet Substation designed to step down high-voltage electricity for local distribution. This is expected to reduce power outages, enhance voltage stability and meet rising energy demand in the region.

Energy officials indicated that the transmission line strengthens the North Rift power corridor and supports the integration of renewable energy sources, including geothermal and wind power from the wider Rift Valley. The infrastructure also provides a foundation for future grid expansion through planned inter-county transmission links.

Local impact and economic opportunities
Residents, local leaders and business owners have welcomed the project, describing it as transformative for the region. In addition to powering homes and businesses, the transmission line is expected to improve access to essential services such as healthcare, water supply and education.

The project has also created employment opportunities for local youth during construction and is expected to spur further economic activity following its completion.
The commissioning of the Lessos–Kabarnet Transmission Line forms part of Kenya’s broader strategy to modernise the power network, promote equitable development and drive sustainable economic growth across all regions of the country.
