Milestone in Recovery Efforts
Speaking during the ceremony, County Director of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, Koiya Arap Maiyo, termed the event a major milestone in restoring lives affected by substance abuse. He noted that the beneficiaries had successfully completed a comprehensive rehabilitation program funded by the administration of Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim.

“We are celebrating 13 individuals who have completed their treatment journey. Today we are witnessing transformation—not only in them but also in their families,” said Maiyo.
County Invests in Free Treatment
The county spent approximately KSh1 million to facilitate treatment for the group, as part of a broader initiative offering free rehabilitation services. According to Maiyo, the program has brought hope to many families, with emotional scenes witnessed as parents celebrated their loved ones’ recovery.
“This is a clear indication that rehabilitation works and must be supported,” he added.
Plans to Expand Services
The Moiben facility, currently the main rehabilitation centre in the county, has provided both inpatient and outpatient services over the past two years. Plans are underway to establish additional centres across sub-counties to improve access and address rising cases of substance abuse.
“So far, we have one centre in Moiben, but more facilities have already been approved,” Maiyo said.
Crackdown on Illegal Alcohol
At the same time, the county has intensified enforcement against illicit alcohol and drug trade, recently seizing over 12,500 litres of illegal brews and arresting several suspects.
“We will not relent in our crackdown. Those engaging in illegal activities will face the full force of the law,” he warned.
Call for Collective Responsibility
Maiyo raised concern over increased targeting of youth, especially during school holidays, urging parents and communities to remain vigilant. He emphasized the need for collaboration between government agencies and the public to curb the vice.
Testimony of Transformation
One of the graduates shared his journey of recovery, describing how the program helped him regain control of his life.
“I was deeply affected by addiction and had lost direction. Through this program, I have learned discipline and responsibility,” he said.
He encouraged others battling addiction to seek help, noting that recovery begins with accepting support.

The graduation marked the seventh cohort from the Moiben Rehabilitation Centre, underscoring the county’s continued investment in restoring dignity and productivity among affected individuals. Authorities have urged residents to take advantage of the free rehabilitation services, emphasizing that recovery is possible.
