The African Union Commission has expressed deep sorrow following a helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, which claimed the lives of eight individuals. The crash, which occurred in the Sikaman Forest of Adansi South District, involved a delegation on official duty.

Ministers Among the Victims

Among those who died were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Hon. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The crash also claimed the lives of senior national security officers and three military crew members, according to official reports.

AU Chairperson Offers Condolences

In an official statement released on August 6, 2025, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, conveyed his condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Government and people of Ghana, and the bereaved families.

“The African Union stands in full solidarity with Ghana in mourning this profound loss. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” he stated.

Solidarity with the Nation

The AU also expressed support for the Ghana Armed Forces and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the nation comes to terms with this devastating loss. The Commission described the incident as a “national tragedy” and called for unity during this period of grief.

As the country mourns its fallen leaders and officers, tributes continue to pour in from across Africa and the international community. The loss has triggered an outpouring of sympathy and reflection on the risks faced by public servants in the line of duty.
