The Kilifi County Department of Health has received a major boost in its mission to improve eye care services following a generous donation of essential ophthalmic equipment from Islamic Relief Kenya. The equipment will support operations at the Kilifi County Referral Hospital and the Mtwapa Sub-county Hospital, enabling the facilities to enhance the quality of services offered to patients with vision-related conditions.
Advanced Equipment for Better Outcomes
The donation includes a surgical microscope, two slit lamps, two cataract sets, a direct ophthalmoscope, and other vital tools necessary for eye examinations and surgeries. These devices will empower healthcare professionals to conduct more accurate diagnostics and perform advanced surgical procedures such as cataract removals, which remain critical in the fight against avoidable blindness.
“This will enable healthcare professionals in Kilifi to perform more advanced diagnostics and surgical procedures, ultimately restoring sight and improving the quality of life for our residents,” read a statement from the Kilifi County Department of Health.
Fighting Preventable Blindness
Avoidable blindness, particularly caused by cataracts, remains one of the leading causes of visual impairment in the region. With this new equipment, Kilifi County is better equipped to handle the increasing demand for eye care services and conduct more outreach programs in rural communities. The county government aims to increase access to timely treatment and reduce the backlog of untreated eye conditions.
Appreciation and Continued Partnership
The Department of Health has expressed its appreciation to Islamic Relief Kenya, praising the organization’s continued collaboration in improving health outcomes in the county. Officials highlighted that such partnerships are vital to achieving universal health coverage and ensuring that no one is left behind, particularly those with disabilities or limited access to specialized healthcare.
The donation marks a new chapter in Kilifi’s journey toward accessible, inclusive, and quality eye care for all.
