Kenya’s football fraternity is once again up in arms over Senegalese referee Adalbert Diouf, who controversially disallowed a goal during the CAF quarter-finals clash between Harambee Stars and Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Striker Ryan Ogam found the back of the net with what appeared to be a clean second goal for Kenya. However, referee Diouf ruled it out, sparking outrage among players, fans, and coaches. Madagascar went on to win the match, and many Kenyans believe that had the goal stood, Harambee Stars were on their way to a historic CAF semi-final berth.
A history of controversy
This is not the first time Diouf has been criticized by Kenyans. In 2024, then-coach Engin Firat accused him of poor officiating during a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Zimbabwe.

“A referee should not decide the game. There were many incidents I could not understand. He should have given Takwara a red card for a dangerous foul in the second half, and there was a clear penalty we were denied,” Firat said at the time.
Fan Frustration and CAF Pressure
The current Harambee Stars coach, Benny McCarthy, has yet to comment on the Kasarani incident. However, frustration among fans remains high, with many arguing that questionable officiating continues to deny Kenya fair chances on the continental stage

As pressure mounts, calls are growing for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to review refereeing standards and hold officials accountable. For Kenya, the disallowed goal remains a painful “what if” moment in their pursuit of football glory.
