Kenya Reaffirms Circular Economy Commitment at Geneva Plastics Treaty

GENEVA, Switzerland — Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Deborah Mlongo, has reiterated Kenya’s commitment to advancing a circular economy during the ongoing INC-5.2 negotiations on a global plastics treaty.

In a statement shared Tuesday on her official social media platforms, the CS said she took part in an informal ministerial dialogue on “Investment Opportunities for a Circular Economy in the Context of the Global Plastics Treaty,” held on the sidelines of the talks in Geneva.

Ban on Single-Use Plastics and EPR Schemes. “I reaffirmed Kenya’s unwavering commitment to a circular economy, anchored in progressive measures such as the ban on single-use plastics and the rollout of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes,” the statement read.

She noted that these policies are central to the country’s sustainable waste management agenda and green transition.

Call for Equitable Climate Finance

The CS used the platform to stress the importance of fair access to climate and environmental funding.

“I also emphasized the urgent need for equitable access to climate and environmental finance, particularly for developing countries, to drive technology transfer, capacity building and infrastructure development,” she said in the statement.

Sharing Success Stories

According to the CS, the ministerial dialogue provided an opportunity for nations to share strategies and experiences in green investment.

“The dialogue was an important platform for countries to exchange success stories and lessons, highlighting how green investment delivers both environmental and socio-economic gains,” she noted.

The INC-5.2 meeting — the resumed fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee — aims to finalise a legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution. Kenya has been a vocal advocate for ambitious global action, building on domestic policies that have positioned the country as a leader in environmental governance.
