Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno today hosted a team from The WEEE Centre, led by CEO Mr. Bonnie Mbithi, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry’s headquarters in Nairobi.

Promoting Safe E-Waste Management
The WEEE Centre is actively involved in collecting, safely disposing of, and recycling electronic waste across Kenya and the region. The organisation works closely with public agencies, private partners, and development actors to advance responsible e-waste management while promoting circular economy solutions.
Plans for Regional E-Waste Conference
During the meeting, the WEEE Centre officially invited the PS to serve as Chief Guest at the upcoming 5th Africa International E-Waste Conference, scheduled for 16–17 October 2025 in Nairobi. The conference, themed “Adaptation to Global E-waste Trends: Changes and Opportunities,” will bring together stakeholders from across the continent to explore sustainable innovations in e-waste management.
Research Highlights Kenya’s E-Waste Challenge
According to the Global E-Waste Monitor 2024, Kenya generated an estimated 51,000 metric tonnes of electronic waste in 2023, with less than 2% formally collected or recycled.
The report warns, “Africa remains one of the regions with the lowest e-waste recycling rates, posing rising risks to human health and the environment if not urgently addressed.” These findings highlight the urgency of partnerships that can enhance e-waste infrastructure, build public awareness, and support Kenya’s national environmental goals.
