In a spirited effort to champion environmental conservation and sustainable development, students at The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) recently participated in a vibrant tree planting exercise led by the institution’s Cabinet Secretary for Health and Environment, Juliet Mokiera Patricks.

Linking Local Action to Global Goals

Mokiera described the activity as a significant step in green recovery and climate resilience, aligning closely with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

“Today, I had the privilege of attending a tree planting session with the Environmental Club. As CS Health and Environment, one of my key agendas has been advocating for green recovery and reforestation, this aligns strongly with the Sustainable Development Goals.” She noted.

Tree Planting as a Symbol of Hope

According to her, planting trees is more than just a routine environmental act—it is a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and responsibility. She emphasized the broader mission of restoring nature, not only by planting trees but by fostering a mindset that values a greener and cleaner future.

“As we walk this journey together, step by step, seed by seed, we are not only restoring nature; we are nurturing a sustainable future for generations to come,” she said.

Institutional Support and Participation

The tree planting activity was spearheaded by the Environmental Club in collaboration with the student union, reflecting the institution’s commitment to hands-on environmental education. The exercise saw dozens of students take part, with the goal of increasing tree cover within the college and inspiring similar efforts across the region.

A Step Toward Lasting Impact

Juliet Mokiera Patricks’ leadership in this initiative is more than a symbolic act—it is a critical step in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Her efforts directly support SDG 13 and SDG 15, ensuring not only ecological restoration but also empowering youth to protect the planet for current and future generations.
