The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has announced through its official social media handles that the Principal Secretary, State Department of Forestry, Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, today paid a courtesy call on the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, at the Service headquarters in Karura, Nairobi.
Focus on Tree Growing Initiatives
During the briefing, the CCF highlighted key programmes being undertaken by the Service, including the 15 billion tree growing initiative, restoration of degraded forest areas, and preparations for the short rains tree growing season. The update emphasized ongoing national efforts to restore forest cover and improve seedling production in readiness for large-scale planting campaigns.

Government Commitment to 30% Tree Cover
The Principal Secretary reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the Service in delivering its mandate of sustainable forest management. He noted the importance of the ongoing tree growing programme in achieving Kenya’s national target of 30% tree cover by 2032, a goal championed by President William Ruto. The meeting underscored the government’s determination to mobilize resources, enhance institutional capacity, and involve communities in order to realize this target.
Strengthening Coordination and Partnerships
The courtesy call also highlighted the significance of collaboration between KFS, communities, and partners in ensuring the success of reforestation programmes. Preparations for the short rains planting season are already underway, with measures being put in place to expand infrastructure and improve seedling production in forest stations across the country.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both the Ministry and KFS. From the Ministry were CFO Tobias Osano, Auditor Wycliffe Muturi, and Legal Officer Ms. Fatma Ali. From KFS were Commandant Mohammed A. Mohammed, Finance Manager Anastasia Muasya, Principal Legal Officer Laura Yego, and Chief Finance Officer Anthony Kiumbuku, among others.
