President William Ruto on Thursday paid an emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister, Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga, during Kenya’s 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
Raila Remembered as a Giant of Democracy
In his address, President Ruto described Raila—who passed away less than two months ago—as a towering figure in the country’s political and democratic evolution.
“Foremost among them was Honorable Raila Amollo Odinga, a stalwart of our country’s democratic journey, who left us under two months ago,” Ruto said.
He praised Raila for dedicating his life to the ideals of freedom, justice, and peaceful coexistence, noting that his courage and resilience shaped Kenya’s modern political history.

“Raila devoted his life to the pursuit of freedom, justice and peaceful coexistence. His courage, resilience and unwavering belief in the power of the people shaped defining chapters in our national story and inspired generations to believe that change is possible,” he added.
Nation Observes a Moment of Silence
President Ruto then invited Kenyans to honor Raila’s memory with a minute of silence.
“I now respectfully urge all of us to join me in observing a one-minute silence in honor and remembrance of the Honorable Raila Amollo Odinga and to honor his sacrifice, service and enduring legacy,” he said.
The stadium fell silent as thousands joined in paying tribute to the veteran opposition leader and democracy icon.
