By Austine Adika
As Kenyans ushered in the festive season, Baringo County once again came alive with colour, culture and commerce during the 2025 Kimalel Goat Auction, held from December 20 to 22 at the historic Kimalel Grounds near Lake Baringo. The annual event reaffirmed its place as one of Kenya’s most significant pastoral economic and cultural gatherings.
Three days of culture, sport and community
The 2025 edition unfolded as a vibrant three-day festival blending tradition with modern community engagement. The opening day featured inclusive sporting activities, including a 1.5-kilometre wheelchair race and a 2-kilometre race for senior citizens, highlighting the event’s strong community-centred approach.

Participants and spectators also enjoyed traditional water sports on Lake Baringo using locally made rafts, motorsport competitions and an energetic youth night that drew young people from across the county.
Day two focused on cultural expression and trade, with traditional music and dance performances, interdenominational prayers and a bustling trade fair. Local entrepreneurs, artisans and farmers showcased a wide range of products, underscoring Baringo’s economic potential beyond livestock.
Goat auction takes centre stage
The highlight of the festival came on December 22 when the much-anticipated goat auction was held. Thousands of goats were presented for sale, attracting traders and buyers from across the country. The auction continues to serve as a vital income-generating platform for pastoralist communities, particularly during the end-year festive season.

A major milestone in 2025 was the introduction of digital participation, allowing buyers to bid remotely for the first time. The innovation expanded market access, reduced logistical barriers and marked a significant step towards modernising livestock trade in Kenya. To enhance transparency and quality assurance, livestock and veterinary officers conducted health and weight inspections on all goats before the auction, boosting buyer confidence and ensuring fair pricing for farmers.
National attention and economic significance
The Kimalel Goat Auction continued to attract national attention, reflecting its growing economic and political importance. Established in 1992 by the late President Daniel arap Moi, the auction has evolved into a cornerstone of pastoral livelihoods, enabling farmers to earn income, pay school fees and meet household needs.County leaders and stakeholders reiterated the importance of strengthening livestock value chains and supporting pastoral communities through structured and reliable markets such as Kimalel.
Beyond livestock, unity and identity
Beyond commerce, the Kimalel Goat Auction remains a powerful symbol of unity, heritage and identity. Cultural performances, boat races and social interactions bring together communities from across the region, reinforcing social cohesion and preserving indigenous traditions.
Looking ahead
With technology now integrated into the auction process, the 2025 Kimalel Goat Auction has set a new benchmark for livestock marketing in Kenya. Organisers hope future editions will further enhance farmer earnings, attract investment and position Baringo County as a hub for livestock trade and cultural tourism.
