The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed allegations of foul play in the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo. Although public speculation was rife, the agency stated that thorough investigations have ruled the incident as accidental.

On Monday, the DCI indicated that a thorough and systematic investigation was undertaken to determine the actual circumstances surrounding the death of Jirongo. Investigations included witness statements from individuals who interacted with him just before the unfortunate incident occurred, as well as those present at the accident scene.

The 64-year-old Cyrus Jirongo met his tragic demise in the early hours of December 13, 2025, due to a fatal road accident. Official reports state that he met with an accident while driving towards his rural home in Lugari, as his vehicle collided head-on with a Climax Coach bus on the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

In the course of the inquiry, statements were obtained from several important witnesses, including his wife, Ann Lanoi Pertet; the bus driver, Tiras Kamau Githinji; and the conductor, Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi. Staff from Eagol Petrol Station were also interviewed, it having been reported that Jirongo's vehicle had been caught on CCTV making a U-turn at the station just prior to the crash.

The involved senior political figures were among the last to engage Jirongo before his tragic end; they are National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, alongside fellow politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli, who voluntarily recorded their statements. The latter three were believed to have spent time with Jirongo at the Karen Oasis Restaurant on December 12, 2025, just a few hours before the fatal accident.

Further strengthening the investigation, seven passengers who were on board the Climax Coach bus presented themselves voluntarily to record statements with investigators. Their testimonies were incorporated into the final report.

A multidisciplinary investigative team went to the scene to collect and secure the evidence. They secured important exhibits, reconstructed the scene, and also secured CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for forensic analysis. The bus passenger manifest and amateur videos from the scene were further examined to clarify the time of events.

After analyzing virtually every exhibit ever found, the DCI determined that the incident was a road traffic accident and that there was no evidence to substantiate the claims for foul play or some external intervention.

Once all remaining procedural processes have been concluded, the investigation file will be transmitted to The Office of The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further directions and necessary action.

Meanwhile, the DCI has called upon the public and political leaders to remain calm, and not propagate unverified claims. The agency warned that the making of speculative statements could compromise an ongoing investigation and elicit unnecessary public anxiety.
