The Garissa Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), located in the Garissa Town constituency, is gaining ground as a model project of the government's national Affordable Housing Programme, which is central to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Besides responding to the growing need for safe, decent and affordable housing, the project has emerged as a strong engine of economic activity within Garissa County. It has provided employment to local citizens and touched the lives of many others from different sectors. From construction workers to suppliers of building materials, skilled artisans to transport service providers and small traders, all these have benefited from ongoing works, cementing the project's impact as a social intervention and an economic stimulus.
Garissa Town, situated in the backdrop of the fast-expanding urban centres of northern Kenya, is undergoing noticeable physical changes. The housing project is giving rise to the new modern skyline away from the older construct to a more orderly planned development. This major transformation is done around the security of the environment supported by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, whose role in ensuring security and good public administration remains vital for long-term development and maintaining investor confidence.
The scheme comprises a total of six residential apartment blocks with a kindergarten, thereby demonstrating a well-discussed plan for community living. Two of the six blocks are provided for market price housing units whilst the other four blocks are meant for affordable and social housing. This mixed housing scheme is meant to enhance inclusivity as it brings together people from different income brackets, and hopefully, support nearby commercial activities with access to essential social amenities.
Integrating residential spaces with social infrastructure, thus, enhances interaction and cohesion within communities, while sustaining economic vigor. It is a vision of urban planning that goes beyond simply providing shelter and creates functional neighborhoods that nurture family life, education, and small enterprises.
The project, anchored on good governance, security, and orderly planning, is envisioned to capacity Garissa Affordable Housing Project with a view to enhancing the quality of life of the inhabitants, widening their economic endeavors, as well as strengthening the image of the town as a regional hub. Wellimplemented housing programs, with their international development approach, provide far-reaching development benefits in the context of BETA.
