By Otieno Patrick

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a KSh 2.5 million fine on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over major security breaches during the opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) between Kenya and DR Congo at Kasarani Stadium.-

Shocking Security Lapses Documented

According to a report by the CAF Security Officer, the tournament opener, which attracted thousands of fans and continental dignitaries, was marred by chaos and security failures. The following incidents were flagged:

Restricted Public Security Areas (PSAs) were breached, compromising core safety protocols.

A stampede at Entry Gate 11 endangered fans trying to access the stadium.

A motorbike dangerously maneuvered through the crowd inside the venue.

Fires were lit behind Block 18, triggering panic among spectators.

CAF protocol officers and a member of the South African President’s Close Protection Unit were denied VVIP access by state security.

A Falcon Private Security guard allegedly assaulted a CAF commercial official and a sponsor’s representative.

CAF Decries Serious Hosting Breach

CAF described the incidents as “a serious breach of hosting obligations”, warning that such disorder undermines the credibility and safety of continental tournaments. The governing body has demanded urgent corrective measures and improved coordination between FKF, private security firms, and state agencies.

Embarrassment on Home Soil

The fine is seen as a major embarrassment for FKF and the Kenyan organizing team, casting a dark cloud over what was expected to be a celebratory home debut in the CHAN 2024 competition. FKF has not yet issued an official response to the penalty or the damning security report.

Match Proceeds Amid Chaos

Despite the off-pitch turmoil, the match went ahead without interruption, with both teams completing the fixture. However, the incidents may jeopardize Kenya’s hopes of hosting future CAF-sanctioned events, as CAF places premium importance on safety and operational integrity.
