Harambee Stars withdraw from Cecafa Four Nations Tournament

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has officially announced that Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the upcoming Cecafa Four Nations Tournament, which was scheduled to take place in Tanzania. Cecafa, the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations, is the regional football body responsible for organizing tournaments across East and Central Africa.

Decision based on technical advice

In a statement dated July 21, 2025, FKF stated that the withdrawal was made after receiving recommendations from the team’s technical bench led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy.

“This decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench, led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy, after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation,” read the statement.

Focus turns to CHAN 2024

With the Cecafa tournament now off the calendar, the national team will redirect its efforts toward preparing for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.

“The team will return to Kenya and resume preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with full focus now shifting to ensuring optimal readiness for the assignment ahead,” FKF added.

Commitment to excellence

The federation concluded by reiterating its dedication to supporting Harambee Stars as they represent the nation on the continental stage.

“FKF remains committed to providing the national team with the best possible environment to compete and represent the country with pride.”

This move signals a deliberate focus on long-term goals as Kenya eyes a strong showing in CHAN 2024.
