Kiwayu Island came alive on Friday as Lamu Governor H.E. Issa A. Timamy, EGH, OGW, officially opened the Governor’s Dhow & Donkey Race Kiwayu 2025. The colorful cultural and sporting festival celebrates the rich heritage of the Bajuni and Swahili communities.

Thrilling Competitions for All
The Governor led the festivities, with the iconic dhow and donkey races as the main highlights. The opening day also featured beach soccer and swimming competitions with teams drawn from Kiwayu, Ndau, Mkokoni, and Kiunga villages. The contests attracted enthusiastic youth and cheering crowds from across the island.

In his remarks, Governor Timamy reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding culture, promoting sports, and empowering local communities through inclusive development.
