Young environmental campaigner and record-breaking winner Truphena Muthoni will go to university on a huge scholarship following her appointment as a university student by Mount Kenya University (MKU), a scholarship that is a great milestone in her life considering her outstanding dedication to fighting environmental issues.
Truphena received global acclaim for being able to hug a tree for a total of 72 hours in Nyeri County, a move that not only set her a Guinness World Record but has now provided her with the opportunity to continue her education. Her move has been widely hailed for being a significant symbol of climate change and has set a good example that people must create awareness to save the planet. The Guinness World Record has now provided Truphena with the opportunity to enhance her education.

The scholarship was publicly announced when Truphema was hosted by the Mt. Kenya University Thika Main Campus during the educational engagement forum. While speaking during the event, the Mt. Kenya University Principal Corporate Communication and Alumni Relations, Prof. Peter Wanderi, confirmed that the institution would fully sponsor her studies in whichever courses she may choose. He stated that they wouldn’t just provide her with tuition but all the support she would need during her learning journey.
“We have offered her the university prospectus so that she can evaluate the programme she is qualified for and the one she wants. Once admitted, Mount Kenya University will take full responsibility for her funding,” Prof. Wanderi explained.
Prof. Wanderi introduced Truphena as: “A symbol of conservation. I think she’s an inspiration to all of us, no matter our age. This university would be very interested in learning from her but also wants to be involved in her development as well,” Prof. Wanderi said while introducing Truphena.
Truphena’s contributions come at a time when her impact as a climate champion is increasing by the day. She has been able to plant over 11,000 trees as a result of environmental projects she has involved people in, and she has been a prominent voice among Kenyan youth in the fight against environmental degradation.
Showing her appreciation, Truphena thanked Mount Kenya University for their faith in her vision. “I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Mount Kenya University for believing in my vision and giving me the opportunity to follow my dreams,” Truphena stated. “This scholarship gives a clear message to the youth that if they have a purpose and are passionate about what they do, then they can make a significant difference in this
“I have learned things from people and from nature. Now is the time for me to learn from the books so that I can enhance my voice for change through knowledge,” she said.
Truphena stated that she is going to study a course related to the environment, stating that she feels academic training will enable her to comprehend the issues pertaining to the environment and come up with ways to solve the problem of the environment not just in Kenya but the continent of Africa. Truphena also stated that the destruction of the environment is a result of a lack of knowledge. This scholarship award not only guarantees Truphena her academic future but also goes to underscore the importance of education towards the empowerment of young people to champion sustainable development.
