The ODM Secretary General has paid tribute to the late party leader Raila Odinga, marking Odinga's birthday and celebrating his lifetime contribution to Kenya's democracy. Nearly three months after Raila's passing, the statement touched on the eternal influence of his leadership and viable principles.
The Secretary General spoke gallantly, noting that Raila's death is still hauntingly fresh in the minds of the political class of Kenya. "The nation and his supporters are still mourning. His great life and contributions to the society continue to guide us," he said.

At the age of 80 years, Raila was remembered as a brave leader who upheld justice, equality, and freedom throughout his life. The Secretary General emphasized Raila as a colossus in the struggle for Kenya's second liberation, who was an embodiment in advancing multiparty democracy and participating in the shaping of the 2010 Constitution, which birthed devolution and enhanced citizen participation in governance.
Emerging political issues since his death, such as heightened intolerance and impunity and threats against democratic practice, were also highlighted in the statement. The Secretary General called forth all Kenyans and supporters of Raila to guard against denying political pluralism and the democratic tenets and party principles that Raila devoted himself to protect during his entire life.
“The architect of Kenya’s multiparty democracy and champion of the Constitution, Baba worked for the decentralization of power, equitable distribution of resources, and citizen participation,” further stated the Secretary General.
He also called upon Raila's followers to continue the fight for governance on principles, not convenience. "He stood with the oppressed, challenged authority when necessary, and consistently put the interests of this country above self-gain. In times when it was easy to compromise, he chose principle. In times when it was safe to be silent, he chose resistance," he said.
He concluded the tribute by saying that Raila's birthday is one such time to reflect, appreciate, and recommit to his values. In his words, "This day allows us to honour Baba's legacy, celebrate his life, and pledge to uphold the values he lived for. Happy birthday, Baba," thereby renewing ODM's commitment to the advancement of democratic governance and the realization of its late leader's vision.
His tribute reinforces Raila Odinga's lasting influence in Kenyan politics while further affirming the party's commitment to uphold the ideals of democracy that he espoused throughout his life.
