Government Releases Ksh.258 million NYOTA Grants to Support Over 10,000 Youth Entrepreneurs

President Ruto Oversees NYOTA Fund Disbursement

The government has released over Ksh.258 million to young entrepreneurs under the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme, marking a major step in efforts to boost youth-led enterprises. President William Ruto presided over the disbursement ceremony held on Monday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

A total of Ksh.258.4 million was issued to 10,337 beneficiaries drawn from Nairobi, Kiambu and Kajiado counties. Each young entrepreneur received an initial business grant of Ksh.25,000 aimed at supporting business start-ups or expansion of existing ventures.

How the Funds Will Be Distributed

Under the funding framework, Ksh.22,000 was credited directly to each beneficiary’s Pochi la Biashara account to facilitate immediate business operations. The remaining Ksh.3,000 was deposited into a Haba na Haba Savings Account managed by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), encouraging beneficiaries to develop a savings culture alongside entrepreneurship.

Focus on Digital Jobs and Youth Empowerment

President Ruto reiterated that the government is keen on empowering young people, particularly by expanding opportunities within the digital economy. He urged the youth to take advantage of government-led programmes designed to have a direct and lasting impact on their lives.

He emphasized that digital platforms allow young Kenyans to access work opportunities without the need for personal connections, noting that the internet has created an open and inclusive work ecosystem where individuals can independently assign themselves tasks and earn income.

Beyond Cash: Training, Mentorship and Support

The President noted that the NYOTA programme is not limited to financial assistance. Beneficiaries will also receive training, mentorship and continuous support to help them grow sustainable businesses. He added that the government is creating opportunities across various sectors, including housing, ICT and labour, to ensure comprehensive youth empowerment.

About the NYOTA Programme

NYOTA is a five-year flagship initiative implemented in partnership with the World Bank and valued at Ksh.5 billion. The programme focuses on equipping young people with business skills, financial support and technical assistance. Beneficiaries are required to use the grants strictly in line with approved business plans developed during training, with ongoing technical guidance provided.

During the second phase of the programme, beneficiaries are expected to receive an additional Ksh.25,000, bringing the total support per youth entrepreneur to Ksh.50,000.

Deputy President Praises Inclusive Approach

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki commended President Ruto for championing the NYOTA programme, describing it as a key pillar in empowering youth interested in entrepreneurship. He noted that the initiative is inclusive, as it supports young people regardless of their education level or professional background.

He revealed that at least 70 youths from every ward in Nairobi, Kiambu and Kajiado counties have benefited from the programme, adding that NYOTA is just one of several youth empowerment initiatives under the current administration.

Third Phase to Cover 16 Counties

The government announced that details regarding the third phase of the NYOTA disbursement will be communicated in due course. The next phase is expected to cover 16 counties, including Kilifi, Lamu, Tana River, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Nyamira, Kisii, Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera and Wajir.
