Support for NYS Initiatives
Harun Maina, the Huruma Ward DCP party aspirant, welcomed the commencement of long-awaited development works by the NYS in the ward, stating that with NYS finally being visible on the ground, residents are more than relieved. He, however, raised serious concerns over how County Development Funds have been used over the years, and he called for an audit of all past budget allocations.
According to Maina, the ward has suffered for years through stalled or undiscernable development, despite repeated funding in successive county budgets.
“I want to appreciate the county government because we have waited for a very long time for development in Huruma Ward. We also thank them for bringing in NYS and for the official launch by the governor. At least now, there is visible work taking place.”
Questions on Previous Allocations
While welcoming the NYS intervening, Maina questioned why projects that were funded several years ago were only now being implemented. He cited specifically the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 financial years for pothole repairs and for road maintenance on tarmac roads.
He walked through places like Gulab Lochab and noted that while county records indicate that work was completed, the residents had seen no evidence of it on the ground.
“If you review the 2022–2023 county budget, there were clear allocations for pothole filling on tarmac roads. Yet today, the murram roads around schools like Gakanu in the Bishop Delany area are being worked on. On paper the projects were completed, but on the ground, nothing was done.”
Claims of Misreporting and Neglect
Maina alleged that county documentation shows several projects as finalized even in light of the absence of any tangible outcomes. This, he stated, raises grave concerns for misreporting and possible embezzlement of public funds.
“There are official records indicating the work was done. But if you go to the actual sites, there is nothing to show for it. This is not about politics—it is about accountability to the people.”
