NEC Cites Breach of Coalition Agreement
The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Tuesday. The party meeting established resolutions which showed that two coalition partners had consistently broken the coalition agreement with their actions.
The NEC intends to withdraw its membership from the coalition as a measure to safeguard the ODM party’s fundamental principles and tactical aspirations and their future objectives. The party indicated that the exit process will be carried out in line with relevant legal and constitutional requirements.
Party Leader to Oversee Coalition Talks
The NEC approved the Central Committee resolutions which had been passed on January 12 2026. The party leader received authority to manage negotiations about potential pre-election alliance agreements with other political organizations and political entities.
ODM stated that any future alliances would be informed by its ideological principles, strategic priorities, and the expectations of its members.
Leadership Changes at the Secretariat
The NEC decided to remove Secretary General Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position because of his failure to meet discipline requirements and his unsatisfactory performance as a leader.
The party constitution and applicable laws permit Hon. Catherine Omanyo to serve as Deputy Secretary General until the party elects a new permanent office holder.
The committee raised concern over what it described as increasing cases of indiscipline within the party, especially among senior officials, and emphasized that ODM operations are guided by its constitution, the rule of law, and collective decision-making through established party organs.
Governance and Reform Agenda
The NEC assessed party progress in executing the 10-Point Agenda and the NADCO report through its governance evaluation process. The NEC praised the committee for its performance yet demanded stakeholders to eliminate the obstacles which stopped reform progress.
The committee mandated Minority Leader Junet Mohammed to compel the upcoming supplementary budget to include an obligatory allocation of KSh 450 billion for counties.
Call for Justice and Accountability
ODM reaffirmed its commitment to justice and accountability, calling on the National Government to provide sufficient funding in the next supplementary budget to compensate victims of human rights violations. The party recommended that the funds be managed through the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to guarantee transparency and prompt distribution.
National Delegates Convention Scheduled
The party will conduct a National Delegates Convention (NDC) in Nairobi on March 27 2026. The convention will focus on shaping the party’s strategic path, endorsing key resolutions, and preparing for the upcoming General Election.
The NEC concluded by reiterating ODM’s dedication to democratic governance, constitutionalism, social justice, and the establishment of an inclusive, reform-driven government that reflects the will and aspirations of Kenyans.
