Eldoret National Polytechnic marks World Press Freedom Day with call to protect children in prisons

As the world marked World Press Freedom Day, The Eldoret National Polytechnic used the occasion to advocate for the welfare of children living in prison facilities alongside their mothers.

The institution, through its Gender Mainstreaming Section, partnered with the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association during a visit to Eldoret Women Prison, where they donated essential items to support incarcerated mothers and their children.

Concern over children in confinement

Deputy Dean of Students Jane Marindich raised concern over the conditions facing children living in prisons, noting that they are innocent and deserve better care and opportunities for growth.

“These children have committed no offense, yet they are confined in prison environments. They deserve better care and opportunities to grow,” she said.

She acknowledged efforts by prison authorities but emphasised that children require play, social interaction, and stimulation — needs that are difficult to fully meet within confined spaces.

Call for alternative sentencing

Marindich urged the government to explore alternative sentencing options for mothers with young children, including community service programmes that would allow them to raise their children in more supportive environments.

She noted that such measures would significantly improve the well-being and development of the affected children.

Linking press freedom and social responsibility

The institution noted that marking World Press Freedom Day goes beyond media rights, highlighting the role of journalism in shedding light on social issues affecting vulnerable groups.

By partnering with journalists, the initiative underscored the importance of using media platforms to amplify voices and advocate for policy change.

Supporting vulnerable communities

The donation exercise aimed at improving living conditions for children in prison while raising awareness about their unique challenges.

Eldoret National Polytechnic called on stakeholders to work collectively to ensure that no child is disadvantaged due to circumstances beyond their control, reaffirming its commitment to community engagement and social responsibility.
