A 10-year-old girl has died after a fire razed her family’s house in the early hours of Sunday morning in New York village, Timbwani ward, Likoni constituency, Mombasa County.
The incident, reported by Radio Kaya, occurred at around 2 a.m. when the family was asleep. Neighbours rushed to help contain the fire and rescue those trapped, but the girl was unable to escape.
“The fire started in the middle of the night and spread quickly.
Neighbours tried to save those inside, but the girl could not make it out.” Radio Kaya reported. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and authorities have launched investigations.
Residents have expressed concern over poor access roads and slow emergency response, which they say worsened the tragedy. Local leaders are urging better fire preparedness and awareness campaigns in vulnerable communities.
The girl’s body was taken to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue, as the family and community mourn the heartbreaking loss.
